In Ontario, there are a large number of employers in the province who require 2nd Class Power Engineers due to the size of the power equipment that they operate. The average age of an Ontario 2nd Class Power Engineer is 58, and therefore urgent need exists for new 2nd Class Power Engineers over the next several years to replace this retiring workforce (Technical Safety Standards Authority, 2012).

The Advanced Power Engineering, Ontario College Graduate Certificate will provide the knowledge and skills necessary for students to challenge their 2nd Class operating (stationary) engineering exams. The 2nd Class level curriculum has a higher amount theoretical content and is considered significantly more challenging than the 4th and 3rd Class levels (currently offered at Lambton College). Formal academic preparation is needed to help adequately prepare operating engineers for this rigorous examination. In fact, 38% of 2nd Class examinations in Ontario result in failure (Technical Safety Standards Authority, 2012).

This program will provide both theoretical and practical education in advanced power plant systems and operations with an emphasis on safety and environmental best practices. There is a focus on supervisory and management of power plant systems and personnel, which is often required at the 2nd Class level.

The Advanced Power Engineering program will be one of its kind in Ontario, involving online instructor-led classes with relevant simulations and embedded learning objects in each of the six courses. The online delivery will accommodate the schedules of 3rd Class Operating Engineers who are unable to leave employment to prepare for this credential. As a result, successful students will be well prepared to challenge the 2nd Class assessments and upon successful completion, will be well positioned for career advancement.

Please Note: In Ontario the official title is Operating (Stationary) Engineer. There is a movement initiated by the Technical Safety Standards Authority (TSSA) to change the title to Power Engineer to align with the other provinces.

Diploma, Degree or Equivalent Experience.
