New global travel award announced for graduates of Lambton College’s Digital Photography program
November 10, 2016
SARNIA, November 10, 2016 – Lambton College’s Digital Photography students will have a new opportunity to take their talents on a global trek thanks to a new award created for graduates of the program.
The Lambton College Photographer Apprentice Award was created exclusively for the college by Photo Tour Trekkers, a London-based tour operator that combines photography and adventure travel. Recipients of the award, valued at approximately $5000 depending on the travel destination, will be given the opportunity to work as a photography assistant and co-host on a Photo Tour Trekker trip.
James Cowie, Director of Photo Tour Trekkers, says the idea for the award stemmed from his involvement with the Program Advisory Committee and the belief that the skill of photography can only be realized by getting out and making great images happen.
“That’s really what Photo Tour Trekkers is all about and it just seemed like a natural fit to reward a deserving Lambton College student with the opportunity to really get out there and put their skills into practice,” explains Cowie.
David Chidley, a Lambton College Professor and award-winning photographer believes the award is an excellent opportunity for graduates to further enhance their photography skills.
“I really hope that the winning student takes full advantage of the award to showcase their creative talents and share ideas and skills with Photo Tour Trekkers travelers,” he says. “This award is as much about the adventure as it is about the learning opportunity.”
The new travel award will be presented to a graduating student who has met a criteria of accomplishments throughout their two years in the program including how they work and interact with fellow students, how they help classmates, program attendance, participation in class and volunteer opportunities, as well as technical skills and creative effort. Organizers are also in discussion to include a voting component that would allow students to vote for the graduate they feel is a worthy recipient of the award.
The winning graduate and coordinating trip will be announced each September. This year’s lucky recipient will travel to Machu Picchu with the Photo Tour Trekker team in November 2017. Organizers say that alternative travel times will be honoured if the recipient is unable to attend the scheduled trip.
The value of the award could vary each year depending on travel destination and will would expire after 24 months.
