Lambton College celebrates 50 years as a leader in post-secondary education

SARNIA, November 15, 2016 – On this day, 50 years ago, Lambton College officially opened its doors, becoming only the second college in the Ontario college system.

Originally housed in a former elementary school, the newly established college welcomed a total of 54 students who were registered in four different programs. Classes ran from November 15 until December 20 and were taught by a faculty of 10 professors, who were selected among 117 teaching applications.

The original intake graduated the following summer on July 4, 1967: First graduating class – all students graduated.

The first graduating class accepted their diplomas on July 4, 1967, and every single student graduated.

Following their inaugural success, the first full-time academic year began in September 1967 with a total 351 full time students.

Over the past 50 years, Lambton College has built a reputation as a post-secondary leader in education, training and research. In addition to a continued rise in full-time enrolment, the College is also home to more than 1,100 international students and provides skills training to over 600 apprenticeship students.

With an expanding roster of more than 90 diploma, certificate and degree programs, Lambton College is known for offering a diverse range of flexible learning options, including a broad selection of programs and courses that incorporate elements of classroom, mobile, hybrid and accelerated educational alternatives.

Lambton College was the first college in Ontario to receive the Apple Distinguished Program designation for its Mobile Learning initiative, which features an exclusive Class+ Experience that has students using their iPad as a tool to access resources like eTexts, software, learning management systems, and apps both inside and outside of the classroom.

Lambton College is also nationally recognized for tremendous growth in applied research and innovation, ranking first in Ontario research colleges and third in Canada. The college also ranks first in Canada for the number of paid research students (students involved in applied research projects that were paid for their work) at a medium-sized college.

In the coming year, a variety of exciting celebratory events will take place that have been carefully planned by Lambton College. The community can expect to see some exciting web features including videos and historical photos, social media, and an exclusive “Celebrating 50 Years” anniversary logo. Planning for a community-wide 50th Anniversary Celebration Day taking place on April 5, 2017 is also currently underway.
