MAN-1103: Human Resource Management

Human resource management is increasing in importance as organizations recognize that the effective and efficient management of human resources can provide a competitive advantage. This course introduces the student to the management of an organization's human resources. The course reviews the nature and importance of human resource management, environmental factors affecting human resource management, human resource planning, job analysis, recruiting, selection, orientation, training, performance appraisal, compensation, health and safety, and employee and labour relations.

ACC-1094: Accounting Concepts I

This course is an introduction to the theory of accounting and the standard methods of recordkeeping and financial statement analysis for non-accounting major students. Generally accepted accounting principles and concepts are emphasized in the preparation of financial statements.

MKT-1143: Marketing Fundamentals

This course introduces students to the foundations of successful marketing and prepares them for advanced marketing courses. The emphasis is on learning and applying marketing concepts in an ever-changing environment that is becoming more global in nature. Topics covered include the following: understanding the marketing environment, consumer and business behaviour, marketing intelligence, and the design and implementation of effective marketing strategies and marketing mix elements.

ECO-1503: Principles of Economics

This course is a survey of the principles which apply to our society's efforts to solve economic problems. The survey includes an examination of fundamental economic problems, economic models, the nature of the Canadian economy, employment, inflation, the role of governments in managing the economy, and the functioning of demand, supply, and firms within the market system.

BUS-1234: Computer Applications for Business

Strong computer skills are essential to finding employment in management and administration. This course provides students with resources and guidance to develop skills in Microsoft Office 2016 applications. While learning about Microsoft Office 2016 with a particular focus on word and document processing, presentation tools and extra time on spreadsheet management, students will also develop skills in time management, self-discipline, and attention to detail. Students will also have an opportunity to improve their ability to read and follow written instructions. Computer Applications for Business is a course delivered using both practical hands-on applications in the computer lab and comprises additional online skills assessment and training tools designed to provide flexibility in learning. This course prepares students for further opportunities to apply their spreadsheet skills and expand upon these skills as they continue in their areas of study.

ENG-1204: English Essentials

This course provides students with the skills required for professional written and oral communications essential to business success and subsequent courses. Students will learn to develop database and internet research skills, prepare professionally written and designed business letters, memos and reports, and prepare, practice and deliver professional oral presentations.

OHS-1023: Occupational Health Safety

This course introduces participants to the broad and ever-changing field of occupational health and safety, an inherently technical subject area. The multiple dimensions of the various issues--technical, legislative, political, and personal--are a required part of the training for a professional in this field or for someone who is involved with this kind of operation. Major topic areas include the Occupational Health and Safety Act, WCB, WHMIS, transportation of dangerous goods, accident prevention and investigation, physical and biological agents, and the management of Occupational Health and Safety programs

HRM-4004: Compensation Management

This course provides the student with an introduction to the design, administration and significance of an organization's compensation and rewards system. An effective system enables an organization to attract, retain and motivate the workforce required in order to achieve strategic goals. Students will gain an understanding of the components of a total rewards system, environmental influences, various models and approaches, regulatory requirements and emerging trends and issues.

HRM-3403: Recruiting & Selection

A basic study is undertaken of the principles, issues, trends, and legislative requirements affecting recruitment and selection. Human Resources professionals need an understanding of how recruitment and selection fits into the broader organizational structure, processes, and goals of an organization and how this function is related to the other functions of Human Resources management. Students will acquire the knowledge and skills needed to successfully identify human resource requirements and attract and retain an effective workforce for an organization. The changing legal environment and the impact of laws on recruitment and selection are an important component of this course.

HRM-2304: Labour Relations

The subject will explore the nature of the industrial relations process. Considerable emphasis will be placed on negotiating and administering the collective agreement through to grievance arbitration.

MKT-3333: Integrated Marketing Communications Practices

In today's marketing world, there are more advertising contact points and specialized media competing for consumer's attention than ever before. To effectively break through the clutter, companies need to use a well-coordinated approach to selecting different promotional methods to differentiate their communication and present a consistent message to target audiences. This course introduces students to the concept of integrated marketing communications (IMC); a strategic planning process that helps companies identify the most appropriate and effective methods for communicating and building relationships with consumers. Students will learn the essential components of an IMC plan, including how to integrate advertising, sales promotions, public relations, direct marketing and digital media to maximize the impact of communications. Students will utilize this knowledge to build their own comprehensive marketing communications plan for a selected product or service.

MKT-4443: Selling Practices

This course emphasizes the development of selling skills and self-confidence required to perform successfully in today's business world. Major topics include the importance of the selling function to all types of organizations, steps in the selling process, consultative selling and relationship building, needs assessment and ethical issues in selling. Emphasis is on planning, preparation, and delivery of an effective sales presentation.

CPP-1001: Co-op Preparation

This course will provide students with employment preparatory skills specifically related to Co-operative Education. This will include understanding the Co-operative Education & Internship Policy, understanding the support system available through the Co-op and Career Services department, utilizing social media, preparing effective cover letters & resume as well as the fundamentals of behavioural based interviewing.

FIN-1013: Financial Analysis & Budgeting

This course is an introduction to the essentials of financial management with a view for wealth maximization of a business enterprise. Topics covered in this course include the following: analysis of financial performance, cost-volume-profit analysis, financing alternatives and costs, management of working capital, budgeting, and capital investment decisions.

MAN-1163: Organizational Behaviour

This subject is an examination of the contemporary Canadian business environment including the organization, leadership and management decision process which influences the behaviour of individuals and groups. Increased global competition, technological change and the rising expectations of both employees and employers have underlined the need for improved and more effective leadership. This subject provides a better understanding of this process.

ACC-3154: Accounting & Finance

This course introduces the use of financial management and managerial accounting principles for planning, decision making, control, and cost management for a business enterprise. Topics covered in this course include the following: analysis of financial performance, cost-volume-profit analysis, relevant costing techniques, budgetary planning and control.

HRM-3603: Human Resource Planning

The focus is on human resources (HR) planning and includes the design of employee evaluation plans. Students learn how to forecast the human resources needs of an organization and to relate the requirements of the organization within ambient socio-political situations.

HRM-3203: Training & Development

The purpose of this course is to provide understanding of the role and methods of training and development in human resources management to senior business students. Course topics include the following: the nature and importance of training needs analysis, the learning process, methods and techniques of training, designing and implementing a program, the learning organization, program evaluation, and future trends and best practices.

HRM-3103: Employment Law

Employment law affects numerous human resource management activities including planning, recruiting, selection, compensation, retention, and termination of employees. The purpose of this course is to review the legal and managerial implications of employment law for human resource management. It includes the formation, terms, regulation and termination of the employment relationship. The course topics include: sources of employment law; whether individuals are employees or independent contractors; discrimination and human rights; employment standards; the duties employees owe to employers; the duties employers owe to employees; formation of the employment contract; the terms of an employment contract; privacy; termination of employment; wrongful dismissal; health and safety; workplace safety and insurance; equity issues; and how employment related information can be found on the internet.

CPL-1049: Work Term - Full-Time

Co-operative education provides students with the opportunity to apply classroom learning to the workplace, undertake career sampling and gain valuable work experience that may assist students in leveraging employment after graduation. CPL-5559: WIL Project

Work Integrated Project is aimed at enriching student success by connecting different program areas of study, cutting across subject -matter lines, and emphasizing unifying concepts. The focus is on making connections, allowing students to engage in relevant, meaningful activities that are connected and practiced in real life. This will attempt to enhance and strengthen the student's employability prospects post-graduation by exposing them to skills and knowledge in demand from today's employers. Students are required to attend the scheduled shifts in the WIL office, reporting to the WIL Supervisor. Weekly real-world challenges are presented in the WIL office, designed by industry professionals. In addition to the weekly assigned deliverables, students are also offered professional development sessions, and exposed to industry guest speakers, enhancing their opportunity to develop their professional network.

*In order to be eligible to participate in a full-time Co-op Work Term (CPL-1049) students must have a GPA of 2.8 or greater.

Failing to do so will require the students to enroll in CPL-5559 WIL Project at an additional cost to the student.

Students are required to follow their prescribed program map and are not allowed to take unscheduled breaks for any reason. Typically, scheduled breaks occur after Term 2.
