Join Us: An Exclusive Film Screening & Discussion

Members of the community are invited to join faculty and students from the Lambton College Photography program for this special event.

Join Walpole Island First Nation filmmaker Derek Sands for a screening and group discussion of his newest short-film “Gaa ZhaaWiijig: Survivors” (2024) which shares the profound stories of ten Walpole Island First Nation elders, highlighting their resilience and honoring the spirit and legacy of the community’s residential school survivors as they navigate the journey of healing and cultural reclamation.

Derek Sands (Ojibway, Potawatomi, and Miami) is a Walpole Island First Nation member and an award-winning Indigenous filmmaker.

Film Credits:

Ziidbaatogeng (2020), featured an Aamjiwnaang First Nation family teaching and sharing the Sugarbush traditions. The film also featured narration from the remaining fluent Ojibway speakers from Bkejwanong.

All Sacred Things (2023), focuses on a group of indigenous college students and their journey of reconnecting to their culture, which inevitably leads them to experience the once almost extinct Ojibway Spirit Horses. The short documentary was recognized in several international film festivals including Red Nation Film Festival and World Culture Film Festival in Los Angeles, and was awarded Best Long Form Short Documentary in the Toronto Documentary Film Festival.
