Domestic enrolment at Lambton College hits five year high
SARNIA, September 23, 2024 – With the fall term well underway, Lambton College is reporting a nearly 10 per cent increase in domestic student enrolment, marking a five-year high for the Sarnia campus. Of the 4,500 new and returning students enrolled for the fall semester, domestic students account for slightly more than half of the College’s total student population.
The surge in enrolment underscores the College’s continued commitment to both student and community success and is marked by a series of remarkable achievements, enhanced student services, and exciting events taking place in the coming months.
Lambton College President & CEO Rob Kardas expressed his enthusiasm for the new term, particularly with respect to recent campus upgrades, and student life initiatives designed to support, engage, and empower every student who chooses to study at Lambton College.
“It’s really quite exciting when I think of everything we have to look forward to this year,” he said. “We have expanded our student services and introduced new amenities, including a brand-new Subway restaurant on campus. These additions are part of our ongoing efforts to create a vibrant, supportive, and welcoming environment for students from all around the world.”
In addition to regular College offerings such as the newly renovated Campus Shop, a growing list of athletics and fitness activities, and enhanced social, wellness, counselling, and career services for both domestic and international students, the College also has an exciting lineup of events on the agenda this semester:
National Day for Truth & Reconciliation
In recognition of National Day for Truth & Reconciliation/Orange Shirt Day on Monday, September 30, Lambton College has planned a full day designed to foster understanding, reflection, and a commitment to reconciliation. Plans for the day include an Indigenous-owned Business Showcase, an Indigenous student panel, and an exclusive film screening and discussion with Walpole Island First Nation filmmaker Derek Sands and his newest short-film “Gaa ZhaaWiijig: Survivors.” All are welcome to attend and full details are available at lambtoncollege.ca.
Varsity Athletics
The 2024-2025 Varsity season is also in full swing, which has expanded to include Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Men’s Baseball, Women’s Softball, Cross Country, Badminton and Firefit.
Later this week, the Men’s and Women’s Firefit teams will be travelling to Kamloops, British Columbia where they will be competing in the Canadian National and FireFit World Championships taking place Wednesday, September 25 through Sunday, September 29. Five members of the Women’s Team have already qualified for Saturday’s individual finals, due to recording the fastest times at the Western Ontario Regional Competition in St. Catherines back in July.
Lambton College is also preparing to host the Ontario College Athletic Association (OCAA) Men’s Baseball Championships, which will take place October 17-19 at Stan Slack Field at Errol Russell Park in Sarnia.
CICE 20th Anniversary
The College will also mark a major milestone in October with the 20th Anniversary of the Community Integration Through Cooperative Education (CICE) program. Since its inception in 2004, the modified program, designed for individuals with learning challenges, has nearly tripled in size, and continues to be a model of excellence in the Ontario College system. The College plans to mark the anniversary with a celebration on Tuesday, October 15 at the Lambton College Residence & Event Centre.
Fall Open House
Plans are also underway for the College’s Annual Fall Open House, which takes place on Saturday, November 16. This event offers a unique opportunity for prospective students and their families to explore the campus, meet faculty and staff, and learn more about the all the programs and services Lambton College has to offer. “We are incredibly proud of the strides we have made as a College and all the milestones we have to celebrate this fall. The increase in enrolment, the expansion of our student services, and the exciting new developments on campus all speak to the dedication and hard work of our entire Lambton College community,” said Kardas. “As we move forward, we remain committed to providing an exceptional educational experience that empowers our students to succeed.”
