The Social Media Board of Governors certificate prepares graduates for the dynamic innovative field which is quickly shifting traditional business and communication practices. Learners explore five key areas related to social media: theory and foundations, designing social media strategies, monitoring and evaluation, digital communications and applied social media practices for organizations.

Learners collaborate and explore how social media is applied to marketing, corporate branding, fundraising, social media campaigns and within organizations to support employee engagement, retention, and corporate communication. Through case studies, discussions and assignments, learners develop the skills and competencies required to effectively utilize social media tools specifically and Web 2.0 tools generally. Graduates of this program broaden their practice, expand career opportunities and stay current to emergent trends in social media.

This program is recommended for individuals with professional backgrounds in a number of fields including marketing, advertising, communication, web design and writing/editing.

Admission Requirements

  • O.S.S.D. or equivalent

Mature Student Assessment for this program is available in the subject of English for the purpose of demonstrating proficiency in this required admission subject. Academic admission requirements can be obtained through Academic Upgrading and the Pre-Programs at Lambton College.

Applications for this program are not accepted through ontariocolleges.ca.

Credential Eligibility

If you are taking courses with the intention of completing this program and earning a credential, you must meet the Admission Requirements. It is your responsibility to supply proof of admission requirements to the Office of the Registrar before completing three courses in this program.

If you complete the program but fail to provide proof of admission requirements, you will be ineligible to receive your credential.

Graduation Fees

  • Students who successfully complete all the academic requirements for this program should submit their intent to graduate in order to receive their credential. The graduate module can be completed on myLambton via Self Service.

    A graduation fee of about $75 is added to your account upon verification that admission requirements have been met. For exact fees contact your Enrolment Services Professional.

  • Textbook costs may be applicable to each course. Most textbooks can be purchased through textnet.ca, but some exceptions do apply. Some courses may have software or equipment requirements that are not included in the cost of the course and are the responsibility of the student. In a few short years, social media has profoundly changed the global communication landscape. With the advent of social media tools such Facebook, YouTube, Wikipedia, and Twitter, more and more people are connecting and collaborating online, and creating and distributing content in ways we have never seen before. This course will provide a summary of the major developments in social media and will examine how social media is changing media, business, government, the economy, development, and education in fundamental ways. Students will be introduced to a variety of social media environments and will gain hands-on experience with many of the leading social media applications. This course requires active participation of students and a willingness to immerse in social media practices.

Students can select a General Education Elective from the Course List to fullfill this requirement.

This course focuses on the latest in digital based marketing tools and strategies including: search engine optimization, website analytics, social media platforms, and mobile communications. The main focus will be to enable students to develop and implement integrated marketing campaigns and strategies by leveraging multiple digital marketing platforms in a simulated Business-to-Consumer (B2C) environment.

Students develop and implement digital marketing strategies in business and consumer markets. Students explore a variety of strategic and creative marketing principles including email marketing, search, design, content, and measurement. Through student collaboration, research, and discussions students assess how a Business to Consumer (B2C) business utilizes digital strategies to acquire, convert, retain, and add value for their customers. Students develop a digital marketing plan for a business.

Using a practical, hands on approach, Writing for the Web takes students inside the fast moving world of writing on the internet, looking at a range of the work assignments and working environments they can expect to encounter. The lectures and assignments examine specific issues and skills like writing for emphasis and visual impact, the basics of SEO (Search Engine Optimized) writing, sourcing images and video and simple techniques for incorporating them with text.

Students will examine the various styles and requirements involved in writing for blogs, online magazines, commercial websites and other text-based models, including social media. The curriculum has a real world focus at all times, and students will both participate in and create their own blogs, putting what they've learned to practice. Each type of writing assignment studied will include a look at work opportunities in terms of what is typically available and how to find those opportunities.

On successful completion of the course, students will have a good grounding in the basics of writing for the web as it is currently practiced.

Technology Requirements

It is required that students purchase a laptop with a Windows operating system.

Internet Speed Requirements

For best performance for students learning remotely, an internet connection with a minimum of 40 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload speed is recommended in order to effectively use video conferencing and remote lecture delivery software as well as, other online resources remotely. Due to the large area over which students may be dispersed, we are unable to recommend a specific provider, so you will need to inquire around your area to find one that best suits your needs.

Minimum Laptop Requirements

In order to access the internet and virtually-delivered software and courseware, student laptops should include the following at a minimum. By meeting the following specifications, students will be equipped to access software and courseware on their laptop through the internet:

  • 16 GB of RAM (with a minimum of 8 GB)
  • 100 GB HDD or more
  • HD Graphics
  • Webcam with a microphone
  • Wireless 802.11n/ac 5ghz capable

To ensure students are getting the most our of their classroom experience, some software will be required.

Lambton College has made this software easily accessible online. Students can leverage our Microsoft Office 365 software packages and services. In addition, much of the software you require for your courses will be available on demand for use on any device - on or off campus.
