2000-1-20 Academic Integrity
Upon request, the college will provide a copy of this policy in an alternate format.
Academic integrity is vital to Lambton College's credibility, reputation, and our students' success. Our students, faculty, and staff must embrace a culture that values knowledge, originality, and intellectual discourse. This commitment should be evident in classroom content, hands-on activities, online and hybrid learning, labs, shops, research environments, and all experiential learning opportunities, both on and off-campus. Adhering to ethical principles enhances student performance, fostering trust and respect among peers and employers. Our commitment to actively engage in promoting and upholding high standards of academic integrity underlines our commitment to developing ethical leaders and equipping students with the moral compass required for their respective professions.

- The evaluation of student performance is built on the premise that the work submitted by the student is in fact their own work or is identified as collaborative. Academic integrity requires accountability in performing work honestly and ethically.
- Academic dishonesty undermines academic integrity and will result in academic disciplinary sanctions. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, the following:
- Plagiarism, defined as representing the work of another as one's own
- Self-plagiarism, defined as reusing wording or assignments previously submitted
- Submitting as one's own, work completed by another person, or work completed through the unauthorized use of generative artificial intelligence applications
- Cheating by obtaining answers to test and examination questions through unauthorized materials, or information from another student
- Allowing another person to take an evaluation in one's place
- Impersonating another student in an evaluation
- Stealing or having unauthorized prior knowledge of an evaluation
- Falsifying or inventing any information required or used in an academic work, examples include inventing data and statistics, and falsifying sources
- Forging documentation, paying a company to forge documentation, or submitting otherwise fraudulent documentation required for the assessment of experiential learning such as co-op placements
- Modifying, without authorization, an examination or test paper, record or report for the purpose of obtaining additional credit
- Failing to comply with Lambton’s Test and Exam Writing Protocol policy (2000-1-6), and/or the policies and protocols of any given assessment
- Helping another person to commit an act of academic dishonesty
- Academic disciplinary sanctions will be progressive and proportionate to the severity of the offense.
- A violation of this policy is determined by reviewing evidence, either discovered during the faculty investigation or provided by the student, judged by the standard of balance of probability.
- Academic sanctions may include the following:
- Official warning with required academic integrity remediation.
- Re-completion and re-submission of the same or alternative assignment, possibly with a reduced grade.
- Reduction of grade without resubmission.
- 0 grade for the work, without resubmission.
- Failing the course.
- Immediate removal from the course with a TM grade.
- Suspension of the student from the College for at least nine months, with TM grades for all courses in which the student is registered, and no fee refund. The suspension will be noted on the student's transcript. The student will be required to apply to the College for readmission through the normal application process.
- Expulsion from the College. This expulsion will be recorded on the student's transcript. This penalty will result in TM grades in all courses in which the student is registered, and no fees will be refunded for the term. A student expelled from the College will not be eligible for readmission to any Lambton College programs or courses for at least five years. The student will be required to apply to the College for readmission through the normal application process. Readmission to the College will be at the sole discretion of the College and considered on a case-by-case basis.
- A course grade of F/NP or TM imposed as an academic sanction supersedes any other grade or status for the course. Thus, a grade of F imposed as a sanction will replace any previously awarded grade (e.g. B), requested grade (e.g. W) or status (e.g. NG) in the course. A student may not continue in a course in which the sanction is applied to the final grade.
- The authority for imposing a sanction depends on the sanction severity according to the below table:
- The Academic Integrity investigation, hearing, adjudication, and sanctioning processes will follow the procedures documented in the accompanying Academic Integrity Guide. The Academic Integrity Guide assigns ownership and timelines for each step.
- Changes to the Guide are at the discretion of the Director, Institutional Intelligence and College Registrar, in consultation with the Senior Vice-President Academic and Student Success.
- A student has the right to appeal an academic integrity decision, following the policy and procedures documented within the Student Appeal Policy.
- Disciplinary decisions and sanctions shall be made part of the student's official record for College administrative purposes. Documentation in a student’s Academic Offence File is retained in accordance with the College's Record Retention Policy.
