Purpose

Lambton College (the “College”) is dedicated to providing housing options and related services that support the academic success and well-being of all students. In alignment with Ontario, Bill 185, Cutting Red Tape to Build More Homes Act, 2024, this Policy outlines the College’s principles, commitments, and available resources to support students in finding suitable housing on and off campus.

Scope

This Policy applies to all student housing services offered by the College, including on-campus residences, off-campus housing resources, and support services. The Policy is designed to guide the provision of housing options and related services to all students.

This Policy does not cover matters addressed in the following policies:

  • 2000-5-1 Student Rights & Responsibilities & Discipline
  • Lambton College Residence and Community Living Standards

Definitions

  • On-Campus Housing Services: Services and supports provided to students seeking or residing in the Lambton College Residence. These services are provided by Lambton College Residence Services.
  • Off-Campus Housing Resources: Services and supports provided to students seeking or residing in housing not owned or operated by the College. These services are provided by Lambton College Housing Services.
  • Student Housing: Residential accommodations provided or facilitated by the College for students, including both on-campus and off-campus options.

Policy

Principles and Commitments

Ease of Access to Information

The College will ensure that all information regarding Student Housing is easily accessible to students from the point of offer through to graduation. Students will be able to access housing services, supports, and resources through user-friendly digital platforms, in-person consultations, and outreach initiatives.

Range of Housing Options

The College will provide students with a diverse range of housing options that align with its enrolment levels. This includes on-campus residences, support for off-campus accommodations, and housing options tailored to meet varying financial and personal needs.

Inclusive Housing Options

The College is committed to an inclusive housing strategy that accommodates diverse needs. Equity in housing allocation will be prioritized, and barriers to access will be actively addressed.

Community Partnerships

The College will engage with local housing markets, landlords, and municipal organizations to increase housing availability and affordability. Partnerships will emphasize fostering community well-being while advocating for students’ housing rights.

Institutional Infrastructure

Lambton College Housing Services

The College will maintain dedicated staff to provide personal support, information, and guidance regarding housing options both on and off campus.

Digital Resources

The College’s Housing website and other digital tools will offer comprehensive and user-friendly features, including:

  • Information on sourcing and accessing Student Housing
  • Community resources, vetted College partners, and legal rights information

Off-Campus Housing Resources

Endorsed Third-Party Partnerships

The College will partner with institutionally vetted and endorsed third-party housing platforms and databases to assist students in finding safe and reliable off-campus housing.

Housing Search and Legal Support

Students will have access to resources and support for housing searches, including workshops on tenant rights, referrals to legal consultation for lease agreements, and general education on navigating the housing market. Dispute resolution mechanisms will also be in place for challenges with landlords or agreements.

Safety and Resources

On- and Off-Campus Safety Resources

The College will provide students with on-campus and off-campus safety contacts and resources, including campus security, transportation options, and emergency contact details.

Short-Term Housing Support

The College will provide information and assistance for students needing short-term housing during transitional periods, such as pre-semester arrival or unexpected relocations.

Emergency Housing Support

The College will offer temporary emergency housing support to students facing acute life challenges, such as domestic violence, family conflict, or eviction. This support includes referrals to community resources, partnerships with local shelters, and temporary College accommodations. Students can access this service through the designated housing team for immediate assistance and guidance.

Housing Support for Incoming International Students

The College will ensure that incoming international students receive comprehensive pre-arrival housing support. Services will include:

  • Guidance on securing accommodations prior to arrival
  • Virtual housing seminars
  • Cultural integration resources and webinars to address logistical and legal barriers
  • A dedicated staff member to assist with navigating local housing markets

Implementation and Review

To ensure the effectiveness of this policy, the College will:

  • Regularly review and update its housing resources and strategies in consultation with student feedback
  • Use measurable goals, such as satisfaction surveys to assess the policy’s impact
  • Continue collaborating with community stakeholders to address evolving student housing needs.
