Lambton College secures two major funding grants to enhance Energy Storage and Waste Valorization research programs

SARNIA, June 27, 2024 – Lambton College is excited to announce that it has been awarded two significant funding grants through the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) to support its energy storage and waste valorization research initiatives. The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of National Revenue, on behalf of the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry, announced that more than $18 million through CFI’s College Fund will be allocated to 23 research infrastructure projects at 21 colleges, cégeps, and polytechnics across Canada.

Lambton College is proud to be a recipient of funding for two of these projects. The CFI’s College Fund aims to enhance the capacity of Canadian colleges to conduct applied research and technology development, fostering partnerships that create innovative products, processes, or services addressing the social, business, health, or environmental needs of Canadian communities and industries.

With over $1.8 million in funding, Lambton College will purchase essential equipment to support its energy storage and waste valorization research efforts.

Dr. Mehdi Sheikhzadeh, Senior Vice-President of Research & Innovation at Lambton College, expressed gratitude for the ongoing support.

"We are thrilled to receive these College Fund grants, which will significantly boost our ability to help SMEs and Canadian economy in energy storage and waste valorization and recycling sectors. This funding will not only allow us to expand collaborative applied research projects with industry but also create a conducive teaching environment for training highly qualified personnel in growing cleantech sectors. Our students will gain invaluable real-life experience working alongside industry partners."

Lambton College was awarded $965,376 to support its Electrical Energy Storage Research Platform (EESRP), which focuses on developing and enhancing energy storage and battery technologies in collaboration with industry partners. Additionally, Lambton College was awarded $880,000 for waste valorization research. This project aims to address global concerns regarding the increasing consumption of raw materials and resulting waste products due to ineffective waste management techniques.
