The Business Writing award of recognition program concentrates on teaching students to become productive, confident, and effective communicators in today's computerized business world.

This certificate is ideal for anyone thinking of starting a small business or launching a career within an established company. The program of study builds from a solid foundation in English writing skills and introduces students to the major styles of business writing. The latter part of the program allows students to choose areas of interest such as web development, business manuals and sales material.

Admission Requirements

O.S.S.D. or equivalent with:

  • Grade 12 English C or U

Mature Student Assessment for this program is available in the subject of English for the purpose of demonstrating proficiency in this required admission subject. Academic admission requirements can be obtained through Academic Upgrading and the Pre-Programs at Lambton College.

Credential Eligibility

If you are taking courses with the intention of completing this program and earning a credential, you must meet the Admission Requirements. It is your responsibility to supply proof of admission requirements to the Office of the Registrar before completing three courses in this program.

If you complete the program but fail to provide proof of admission requirements, you will be ineligible to receive your credential.

Graduation Fees

  • Students who successfully complete all the academic requirements for this program should submit their intent to graduate in order to receive their credential. The graduate module can be completed on myLambton via Self Service.

    A graduation fee of about $75 is added to your account upon verification that admission requirements have been met. For exact fees contact your Enrolment Services Professional.

Using Word, you will learn to combine basic design principles and techniques to produce a variety of printed matter, such as stationery, business cards, posters, newsletters, resumes, and more. This is a practical, hands-on course that will place emphasis on producing real-life, professional materials using specific desktop publishing terminology and document-handling techniques.

A critical understanding of contemporary Canadian issues is vital to being an active member in our democratic society. Students explore a variety of topics and analyze their ethical implications and relevance to Canadian life. Discussions, debates, and other collaborative activities offer opportunities to consider recent controversies from different perspectives, and use of a variety of media (e.g. newspapers, articles, and other resources online) allows for in-depth reflection on the history and current state of a range of social and political topics.

This course includes various technical writing problems that challenge the student to generate practical solutions that are clear, focused, and expressed in appropriate language and style. The course assists students to develop sound thinking and planning skills that are fundamental to communicating successfully in technical fields. In addition, the computer is used for online research, collaboration with other students, and formatting technical information to industry standards using text and graphics.

Learners develop a social media strategy. The focus is on skills-building and on creating and implementing a social media strategy including identifying and working with social media tools, assessing how tools support overall branding, advertising, marketing and/or communication strategies. Learners explore, identify and engage online communities that support internal and external social media strategies. In addition, learners are introduced to resources that aid in the development and implementation of effective social media strategies. Through case studies, learners explore both best practices and cautions when designing social media strategies.

This course will cover the creation of a comprehensive business plan. The course will capture the entrepreneurial spirit, and students will get first-hand exposure to the benefits and drawbacks of starting a new business and being your own boss. Through the steps in creating the business plan, students will have the opportunity to practice start-up skills through defining markets, targeting customers, and addressing financial planning such as cash management, budgeting, and financing. At the conclusion of the course, students will each have the opportunity to ‘pitch’ their plan to a potential investor.

This course provides student with skills and knowledge to help support their career search and succeed in the workplace. Students align their personal skill set and goals to guide them on their career paths. They will learn how to effectively conduct a job search, build a professional and well-tailored resume and cover letter, and develop and practice interview techniques. Students will also develop their personal brand to help support effective career networking and aid in their job search. Teamwork and collaboration in the workplace are also discussed. Self-reflection is used to inspire insight and support their professional career journey.

Using a practical, hands on approach, Writing for the Web takes students inside the fast moving world of writing on the internet, looking at a range of the work assignments and working environments they can expect to encounter. The lectures and assignments examine specific issues and skills like writing for emphasis and visual impact, the basics of SEO (Search Engine Optimized) writing, sourcing images and video and simple techniques for incorporating them with text.

Students will examine the various styles and requirements involved in writing for blogs, online magazines, commercial websites and other text-based models, including social media. The curriculum has a real world focus at all times, and students will both participate in and create their own blogs, putting what they've learned to practice. Each type of writing assignment studied will include a look at work opportunities in terms of what is typically available and how to find those opportunities.

On successful completion of the course, students will have a good grounding in the basics of writing for the web as it is currently practiced.

Technology Requirements

It is required that students purchase a laptop with a Windows operating system.

Internet Speed Requirements

For best performance for students learning remotely, an internet connection with a minimum of 40 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload speed is recommended in order to effectively use video conferencing and remote lecture delivery software as well as, other online resources remotely. Due to the large area over which students may be dispersed, we are unable to recommend a specific provider, so you will need to inquire around your area to find one that best suits your needs.

In order to access the internet and virtually-delivered software and courseware, student laptops should include the following at a minimum. By meeting the following specifications, students will be equipped to access software and courseware on their laptop through the internet:

To ensure students are getting the most our of their classroom experience, some software will be required.

Lambton College has made this software easily accessible online. Students can leverage our Microsoft Office 365 software packages and services. In addition, much of the software you require for your courses will be available on demand for use on any device - on or off campus.
